Alabama Backroads Century - Update

The Alabama Backroads Century Series (http://alabama-backroads-cycling.com) just keeps rolling along - last week's Hot Hundred in Tuscaloosa had a record turnout of 664 riders!

Up next in the ABC series is BUMP's Ironworks Century on August 9, a week from this Saturday at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park.

The Ironworks Century is a much smaller event than the HH, appealing to, shall we say, a more refined taste - especially (for the first 15 miles, anyway) to connoisseurs of climbing! Then it calms down a lot.

Online registration for $35 closes Wednesday, August 6, while onsite registration on the big day is just $40.

Distance options are 44, 66, 78 & 100 miles; detailed route info, map, etc. is online at www.bikereg.com/22280<http://www.bikereg.com/22280<http://www.bikereg.com/22280%3chttp:/www.bikereg.com/22280>>, or click on the Ironworks logo at www.bump.org<http://www.bump.org<http://www.bump.org%3chttp:/www.bump.org>>.

This year marks the 5th anniversary of BUMP's premier road event, and the first 100 century finishers will get a handsome ABCS Centurion medal (later finishers will have to await a re-order), courtesy of the good folks at Bike Link.

Come join us for some hot fun in the summertime!

July meeting

If the crowds in England at the opening stages of the TDF are any indication of the condition of the sport of cycling, then we might be moving into a bigger room next month! Wishful thinking perhaps, but remember this, each one of us can share our joy and passion for the ride and what cycling has done for us and who knows what will happen. I know. Rant, rant rant. This month we have the privilege of having our own Nathan Spence of the Auburn Flyers coming to share with us. Please plan to be there as I am sure he will be able to tell all about this race club and answer our questions. Also I would like you all to start thinking and planning for the Johnny Ray. We will only have "2" meetings before the event! Time has flown by! Get ready to volunteer or ride or both! See you next Monday, July 14 at 7:00pm, at Church of the Highlands. Dave

June meeting

Ah June.... I could dream all day of June. No, not a girl, the month! Growing up it was the first full month of summer vacation. That meant no school! All day in the pool or riding bikes. There it is, riding bikes. The thing we did as kids that gave us out first taste of freedom. How far from home home could we go? Ten, fifteen maybe twenty miles. All with no parents. Those were the days, no cares, just be home by supper. Well. we all are in some way shape or fashion, pedaling hard to try and reach those days again. That brings me to this months meeting. We are in the heart of the century season and many have or are planning their century ride. With that in mind I have asked some of our multiple centurions to share their tips and thoughts. There will be a Q&A so have some goods one ready for them. See you Monday, June 9 at 7:00pm at Church of the Highlands. Keep Pedaling, Dave

May meeting

> There is an old saying about "best laid of mice and men and how they often fail." Well I have been on the razors edge of those plans. > Let me put it this way, We are going to have some GREAT meetings over the next couple of months, not to sure how this month will turn out. Oh, you don't want to miss it, it has all the makings of one of our epic meetings, just can't promise all of that at the time of this writing. I know that many of you need to make plans and that this emails is late and I could not wait any longer to send it out, > So,7:00pm at Church of the Highlands on Monday, May the 12 is the date. Be there for one of the more exciting meetings we have planned! > Dave

April Meeting

AH SPRING! The warmer temps and sunny mornings, the pollen! The sneezing and itchy eyes. We can't have it all in the south, but it sure is a lot prettier. Hopefully you all are ready and excited about our new KITS! Be sure to be there to get all the info. Also, we will be enjoying the knowledge of our own Mike Hogan as he schools us on bike fit. If you haven't had the chance to listen and garner some of Mike's vast bike knowledge, you are in for a treat! So don't miss this meeting Monday, April 14, at the Church of the Highlands at 7:00pm. Dave Kerr
