Do you make an impact? Strava's watching...

thought this was pretty cool...

What's Strava doing with all that data?  Where do you ride?  Where's everyone else riding?  The intersection of mapping nerd and cyclist hit a high for me today when I discovered a cool new mapping application from Strava Labs.  The Strava Labs Global Heatmap is an amazing visual resource that shows the route of over 77 million rides and hundreds of billions of data points.

Volunteers Needed! AL High School Cycling League

Hopefully you were able to come out to the first interscholastic mountain bike race in the history of AL two weeks ago at Tannehill. If you did, you saw first hand the amount of work it takes to pull these events off. All of that work is done by volunteers!!!

Well, it's that time again for us to start preparing for the next race on April 12th down in Auburn and that means we need to start asking for all you awesome volunteers to step up and help out again. As of today we are only 41% toward filling all the necessary volunteer spots for the weekend. So let's get er' done Alabama and come be a part of history! Signing up to volunteer is as easy as 1,2,3.....

ONE

Go to our volunteer sign-up page and check out the positions that need awesome people like you. We've even put together cool videos showing what you'll need to do. Here is the LINK.

TWO

Capture Show up at the volunteer tent on race weekend and check in with our Volunteer Coordinator to get your awesome Alabama League volunteer shirt and to get connected with one of our staff members to make sure you know what to do. And...

THREE

Be part of something that will help change lives forever! We can't do this without your help. Please consider taking the time to look over these volunteer positions and come out to one (or more) of our races and be a critical part the Alabama league's success.

Thank you,

Eddie Freyer,

Alabama League Director

Wednesday night ride

For those looking for the Wednesday night ride let’s go ahead and call it back!  Not sure when news will reach everyone but let’s say April 1st (no foolin’).

Here’s the skinny:

We’re not race fast but we’re not casual; let’s say 16-18mph.  We ride as long as the light holds, so shorter now and longer later (20-30 miles).  Everyone’s welcome but expect to keep up but don’t live off the front.  If you can do that we won’t leave anyone behind.  We regroup at turns/ major intersections when we get stretched out, but mostly stick together.  No set route, just dodging traffic and finding the tailwind.  Meet in the usual lot at Auburn High School.  We roll at 5:30p.

March Meeting

I don't know if March came in like a lion, it is too cold for lions or lambs. If you don't know the old tail it's, in like a lion out like a lamb or in like a lamb out like a lion. March that is not me! This month we have Keith Foster from The Alabama Rural Ministry coming to talk to us about the cross state ride they are putting on and Danny James from James Bros. Bikes will be here to tell us about the first Tri-athalon in Auburn that they are presenting. I know, a lot of info, so I will cut this short. Now don't faint, and see you all at 7:00pm at Church of the Highlands! Dave P.S. There will be coffee this time

February Meeting

First thing, a little house cleaning business. If you have asked to be taken off of the email list, please send me that request again. I lost the updated list, I think. Well, I'm not sure. So, if you get this months meeting notice, please don't send any hate mail, just put it to my lack of computer knowledge or Skynet, either one.

Alright! It is time for our annual suffer-fest. In fact it is the event that I look forward to most of all! What is that you ask, wait for it..... a little longer....

THE ANNUAL WATTS TEST/COMPETITION!

Now stop. I heard that collective moan and groan, some you are even reaching for the delete button now, but wait,, let me explain. For me the pain on a bike beats the daily pain of arthrits and besides it's only 10mins. Plus this one event, yes this annual right of passage is the only one of its kinds in Auburn! If that is not enough for there is more, this event is "THE" event that heralds in SPRING, which means warmer weather. Did you read that, warmer weather!!! But wait there's more, this year we are offering door prizes, yes even prizes!

So, dust off the bike, you will need one. Bring your riding shorts, for the obvious reason. Also, don't forget your riding shoes, to make the look complete. We will see you Monday at 7:00pm at Church of the Highlands!

Dave

P.S. Let's see if any one can beat Herb this year.

December Meeting

Seasons Greetings Everyone!

I hope that you all are ready for Christmas, I know I am. I enjoy this time of year. Not that I need a certain time to get together with friends and share a great evening of food and merriment.

That is what we have planned for this Monday night December 8, 7:00pm at Tim McDonald's house. Tim and Deb have open their home for us to meet there for a party. So come and bring a snack and your thoughts for the year, because we will talk and spread good cheer!

If you need directions to the McDonald house email Tim at; mcdontp@auburn.edu

Remember, we are not meeting at Church of the Highlands this month. The time, 7:00pm, and date, Dec, 8, are the same.

Hope to see you there. If not, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Dave
