JRC Participants,
The dust has cleared on another amazing Johnny Ray Century. On behalf of the East Alabama Cycling Club and the Davis Phinney Foundation, thank you all so very much for your participation and enthusiasm! This year's JRC saw over 200 cyclists covering the back roads of East Alabama, following the now fabled Johnny Ray rail line between Opelika and Roanoke, Al. You saw historic sites, beautify scenery and Chambers County's award winning pave. Nearly half of you went home with Centurion medals commemorating your completion of 105 miles and participation in the Alabama Backroads Century Series. We heard from many of you that this was your first century, for which we are honored and proud. We also heard from a staggering number who have done every single ABC ride!
Combining your participation and donations with the generosity of our corporate donors, East Alabama Cycling Club is honored to send the Davis Phinney Foundation $7,719.52 to support their programs providing tools, information and inspiration to those living with Parkinson's Disease. For more information on the Davis Phinney Foundation and how your support makes a real difference please see the attached letter.
Finally, throughout the JRC you were supported by eacc members, volunteers, some fabulous local organizations (the Auburn Bike Committee, Auburn University Flyers, CAMP-SORBA & Roanoke Rotary Club) as well as many sponsors. Please visit the JRC Sponsors page for a complete list of these wonderful folks. As you bump into them at other events or patron their generous businesses please remember to thank them for making the JRC what it is.
So thank you once again and we hope to see you at next year's Johnny Ray Century (Sept 26, 2015)

> JRC Volunteers, > > Join us for the Johnny Ray Century Volunteer's Ride on Saturday, September 20. We will leave from Opelika 1st United Methodist church at 7am, ride the JRC route and return to the church. It's not necessary to ride the century. Ride for as long as you like. There will be no concierge, so bring cash for convenience store style gorp. The extended forecast has been consistent for next week; 65ish to 80ish (emphasis on the "ish") and dry. Club colors, fun, fellowship, and fartleking are all encouraged. > > See you there! > Herb R
Paid Research Study
Advertisement for a Paid Research Study Titled:
"The efficacy of branched chain amino acid supplementation on cycling performance, body composition, and immune system markers in trained male cyclists over a training season"
Researchers in The School of Kinesiology at Auburn University are performing a cycling study. Specifically, researchers are evaluating if chronic oral supplementation with branched chain amino acids (or BCAAs) affects body composition, blood variables related to immune system function, and cycling performance variables in male cyclists that train 3-7 days/week of road cycling totaling a weekly mileage of >100 miles.
You may qualify if you:
1) are a male cyclist that trains 3-7 days/week of road cycling totaling a weekly mileage of >100 miles.
2) are between the ages of 19-50.
3) are currently not consuming supplemental protein, creatine, and/or BCAAs, or have not within the past month.
4) do not have any precluding medical issues (i.e., cardiovascular issues, breathing or muscle/joint issues, heat-sensitivity issues) that are aggravated by performing a maximal bicycling test indoors.
If you decide to participate in this research study, you will be asked to:
1) Complete a consent and familiarization session at the Auburn School of Kinesiology, located at 301 Wire Road, Auburn AL (room 136), lasting 60 min where you will perform a cycling peak power test.
2) A pre-study testing session at the Auburn School of Kinesiology lasting 1.5 hours for cycling performance testing, body composition assessment, and blood draw.
3) 3-month supplementation and self-training period in which we request that you continue your bicycling habits and that you supplement twice daily with BCAAs or a maltodextrin placebo capsules.
4) A post-study testing session at the Auburn School of Kinesiology lasting 1.5 hours for cycling performance testing, body composition assessment, and blood draw.
The total approximate time commitment in the Kinesiology building will be approximately 4-5 hours.
Beyond receiving free performance and body composition testing, you will be monetarily compensated in the form of a $150 pre-paid VISA gift card for your time commitment upon completion of the study (no pro-rated compensation will be provided for non-completion).
If you are interested in participating in this study, please e-mail your name and contact information to Mike Roberts, PhD at mdr0024@auburn.edu

> Greetings > As I was pedaling down 2nd Ave. the other day I was complaining to myself that the wind was always blowing either against me or across me. This day I thought it was a cross wind, I felt wind blowing in my ears. Well, it was just air blowing through the space that was left were my brain should have been. As you can tell by now the reason was that I forgot this email. I could ask for forgiveness, but I know that all of us have life that piles up. I did not forget the agenda though!
